MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin’s multi-event athletes are the first members of the men’s track and field team to compete in a busy week in California for the Badgers.  

With two athletes in the top five after the first day of competition in the California Invitational decathlon in Azusa, Calif., consider the outdoor season’s West Coast debut a success.

Sophomore David Grzesiak stands third in the decathlon through five events with a score of 3,713. Fellow sophomore Derek Steinbach is right behind in fourth place with 3,475 points.

Also competing for Wisconsin is sophomore Ian Jansen, who stands in eighth place with 3,354 points.

Steinbach got off to a strong start after the first day of competition, posting the longest throw in the shot put, a mark of 43 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

Grzesiak had the third-longest throw, a distance of 41-3. Jansen was behind him, notching a throw of 35-8.

In the 400 meters, Grzesiak led all competitors, breaking the tape in a time of 50.16.

Steinbach and Jansen followed by clocking times of 51.54 and 51.69, respectively.

After a good performance in the 400 meters, Grzesiak followed up with a strong showing in the high jump. He had the second-highest jump, clearing a height of 6-6 1/4.

Jansen notched a clearance of 5-11 ¼, while Steinbach recorded a jump of 5-8 3/4.

Steinbach was the fastest Badger in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 11.58 seconds. He was followed by Grzesiak, who finished in a time of 11.63. Jansen was right behind, clocking a time of 11.67.

In the long jump, Grzesiak jumped the furthest of any Badger, posting a mark of 22-0 1/4. Steinbach was next with a leap of 21-9, and Jansen followed with a jump of 21-8 3/4.

The decathlon continues on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT with the final five events of the 10-event competition.
