Oak Ridge, Tenn. – The Wisconsin lightweight rowing team competed against Tennessee in its final exhibition competition of the spring season on Saturday morning.
The Badgers’ second novice eight boat recorded two victories, while the third varsity eight boat also tallied a first place finish against the Lady Volunteers. The UW first and second varsity four also placed first and second, respectively. All of the eight races were over a 2,000-meter course except the final race of the day, which was cut to 1,500 meters. The varsity four race was 1,000 meters as well.
“I’m really proud of the hard work the team put in this week and of the results we got today against what is usually one of the top collegiate rowing teams in Tennessee,” head coach Erik Miller said. “Tennessee is a regular NCAA championship regatta participant. To go out and perform well against a program of that caliber is a strong way for us to start off the season.”
The lightweight first varsity eight competed against Tennessee’s openweight varsity eight and fell short in the first race, finishing in 6:48.1 while the Lady Volunteers completed the course in 6:40.8.
“I think the team did a pretty good job in the first race,” Miller said. “We were able to put together the things we’ve been working on all week, and the team did a good job with that.”
The second race between UW’s first varsity eight and Tennessee’s openweight varsity eight saw the Badgers finish in 6:41.4 and the Lady Vols clock in at 6:35.0.
“The lightweight varsity really performed well today,” Miller said. “It’s been a quick week in going from training mode to on the water racing mode, so putting all of the pieces together after just one week on the water was great.”
UW’s second varsity eight raced Tennessee’s second openweight varsity eight. The Badgers finished in 7:18.2, but Tennessee slightly edged Wisconsin with a time of 6:49.2.
In the second race between these two boats, Tennessee again came out on top. The Lady Vols finished in 7:00.7, ahead of Wisconsin’s lightweight first novice eight (7:09.0), Wisconsin’s first novice eight (7:19.8) and Wisconsin’s lightweight second varsity eight (7:31.8).
In the third race of the day, the UW third varsity eight clocked a 6:52.93, just ahead of the Badgers’ first novice eight in 6:57.57. The lightweight first novice eight finished in 7:01.74, and Tennessee’s third varsity eight rounded out the field in 7:22.94.
Wisconsin’s second novice eight took first in the fourth race in 7:00.43, edging Tennessee’s fourth varsity eight/first novice boat (7:16.70) and Wisconsin’s lightweight second novice eight (7:32.75).
In the final race of the day, Wisconsin’s second novice eight finished the 1,500-meter course in 5:48.60 to post a victory over Tennessee’s fourth varsity eight/first novice eight (6:07.60) and the Wisconsin lightweight second novice eight (6:34.70).
“Overall, it was a good way to start the season,” Miller said. “I’m happy with how things went today and we’re looking forward to coming back to Madison, getting on the water, and starting out lightweight season next week in California.”
Next weekend, the UW lightweight first and second varsity eight will go to California to race against Stanford and Princeton, while the lightweight novice first and second eight will race at the Knecht Cup in New Jersey.
