MADISON, Wis.—Balancing a challenging schoolwork load and a rigorous sport can be a tough feat to conquer, but Badger senior women’s rower Katie Hurtis has conquered the challenge flawlessly.
Last week, CoSIDA released its annual eight-district awards, and the Rochester, Minn., native found herself on CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District Five’s first team.
Selections are based on each athlete’s success in his or her sport as well as an impressive in-class resume. In the coming weeks, CoSIDA will release its Academic All-America team, which Hurtis has now qualified for.
Hurtis has proven she meets all of the requirements of the award. On the water for the nation’s eighth-ranked women’s openweight rowing team, the senior tabbed Second-Team All-Big Ten honors this season on the water. Aside from that, she was named to the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Team. She was also a key contributor to the Badgers’ varsity eight boat, which helped Wisconsin win its first-ever Big Ten and NCAA Central Region championships earlier this season.
In the classroom, Hurtis shines as well. The three-time Academic Big Ten recipient finishes her UW career with an almost-perfect 3.96 GPA with a major in kinesiology.
Hurtis takes the water for the final time this weekend in Gold River, Calif., as the team competes for a national title in the NCAA rowing championships. Hurtis already has experience on the big stage, as she has already rowed in two NCAA rowing championships in her career.
