
Welk advances in U.S. Amateur Public Links Tournament

Greensboro, N.C. - Sophomore Thomas Welk of Bismarck, ND, qualified for the round of 64 at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Public Links tournament July 12-17 at the at the 7,218-yard, par-71 Champions Course at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center in Greensboro, NC.
Welk shot an even par 72-70-142 to tie for 13th in the 156-player field and become one of 64 players to advance to the first round of match play Wednesday. Welk faces Brent Martin of La Plata, Md. The six-round match-play portion of the championship will conclude on Saturday with a scheduled 36-hole final.
A red-shirt freshman last season, Welk played in four spring tournaments for the Badgers averaging 77.0 through 13 rounds. His best tournament finish was a tie for 37th at the Crooked Stick Invitational (T37, 76-78-78=232). He has career bests of 77-151-230 and tied for 44th at the Big Ten Tournament with a 308.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links, established in 1922 for bona fide public-course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
