MADISON, Wis. – Today, we continue our look at the Badger newcomers and today’s spotlight is on freshman Lindsey Seil. The 5-5 defensive specialist from West Bend, Wis., joined the UW late but has immediately fit into the team.
Seil played only one year of high school volleyball before concentrating on her club career. She played with Capital Volleyball Academy in Madison, competing in a number of national championships. Her club team recorded four top-10 finishes at national championships or national qualifiers. Seil participated in the 2006 USA Volleyball Development A1 Camp and 2007 USAVB Development A2 Camp.
Why Wisconsin?
I love that it is close to home so I can still be able to see my family and friends. I like the size of the campus so I can meet new people too. The competitive atmosphere of playing in the Big Ten and the strong academics at UW can't be beat. The team and coaching staff are great and I love the Field House!
What have you enjoyed the most about Madison so far?
I really enjoy walking on State Street during our days off, but I have to say the best experience so far was being a part of Fan Fest and meeting all the Badger fans and getting to hang out with the kids.
How has training been for you so far? What has been the biggest difference from high school and club?
The training was pretty tough to get used to for the first week. It was more of an adjustment to physically get used to playing all the time. I was so sore for about a week, but it went away as I got stronger. The level of intensity and constantly pushing yourself to be better has been a nice change as well.
What have you been most impressed with the coaches?
I am really impressed with how they keep everyone active in practice and their passion to help every player improve their game. I really admire their patience with trying to help perfect everyone's technique.
What do you think of your teammates and the team chemistry?
It's pretty simple – I love my team! They are so sarcastic and hilarious that there definitely is never a dull moment. It is great to be a part of a team that has your back and who are willing to listen and give advice about anything you might have questions about.
What has been the biggest surprise so far with college volleyball and/or the whole college experience?
I am surprised that I haven't missed home as much. I, of course, do miss home but I never thought I would have this much fun during the preseason with the team!
What class are you most excited for and why?
I am really excited for my sociology class because it goes into the sociological aspect as to why humans react and do the things they do.
What are you missing the most from home? How do you stay in touch with your friends and family?
I miss my dog and two cats like CRAZY. I call my mom and sister every day. Texting really helps me stay in touch with friends and family. I am so excited to have my computer so I can Skype with my friends and family.
Now that the first weeks of practice are out of the way, have things settled down? What are you most excited about in the next week or two?
After the first week of practice, it has settled down a little more. I'm really glad I am not sore anymore. I am getting used to the schedule and the hours of intense practice. In the next week or two, I am looking forward to continue improving and getting physically stronger. I am really excited to see my friends from home move in to their dorms on campus!
What team are you looking forward to playing and why?
I am looking forward to playing Michigan because then I get to see my old club teammate Molly Toon but I am also excited to have the opportunity to play against any of the Big Ten teams because I know it will be challenging and fun.
