MADISON, Wis. -- Every day this week leading up to the induction ceremony, one of the seven members of the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2010 will be celebrated. The Hall of Fame induction is Friday, Sept. 10 outside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The 6 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. Today's celebrant is former head football coach and current UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez.
As the head football coach of the Wisconsin Badgers, Barry Alvarez oversaw the most successful era of UW football in school history.
He led the Badgers to three Big Ten titles (1993, '98 and '99) and three Rose Bowl championships (1994, '99, and '00), making history by becoming the first Big Ten team to win back-to-back Rose Bowls.
His 118 career victories are 53 more than any other Wisconsin coach and made him just the 10th head coach to win 100 games at one Big Ten institution. And Alvarez's teams were at their best in the postseason as his 8-3 career record in bowl games is the best in NCAA history among coaches with at least 11 bowl appearances.
Alvarez was inducted into the Wisconsin State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and was enshrined in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame as part of its Class of 2009 in January. He also is a member of the Class of 2010 of the College Football Hall of Fame and will be inducted in December.
More on Alvarez's accomplishments can be found on The Alvarez Era page.
The members of the Class of 2010 include Alvarez, football and men's track and field athlete Dan Lanphear (1957-59), football player Don Davey (1987-91), wrestler Donny Pritzlaff (1997-2001), women's swimmer Ellen Stonebraker (1997-2001) and men's track and field athlete Dick Houden (1947).
