MADISON, Wis. -- The Badgers completed their record-setting tournament by winning the Badger Invitational, which Wisconsin hosted at University Ridge Golf Course.
Wisconsin tied the Badger Invitational team mark with a 282-300-297--879 to finish two strokes ahead of a charging Augusta State's 304-286-291--881. Iowa (894) finished third, followed by Xavier (902) and Southern Methodist (920). The Badgers won the Badger Invitational for only the second time in its 17-year history, and the first time since 1983.
"I'm thrilled with the victory," coach Todd Oehrlein said. "Early in the fall season this makes a big difference, especially from a confidence standpoint. We've had excellent practices and focus, so this was a great start for us. Augusta State has a traditionally good program. They played fantastic the last two rounds and really made us work to earn it, which made the event more exciting because it was extremely competitive."
UW senior Carly Werwie won the tournament with a school and Badger Invitational 54-hole record 71-69-73--213.
"We're really excited for her," Oehrlein said. "It's her first tournament victory individually, but she's been close a couple of times and played very well. She's been very relaxed and composed. She's shown the kind of maturity which is exactly what you hope to see from your seniors."
Xavier University's Audrey Fellmeth was two strokes back with a 72-69-74--215. Augusta State's Casey Kennedy and Natalie Wille tied for third at an even-par 216, and Wisconsin's Lindsay Danielson, who shot a 54-hole personal best 68-76-74--218, finished fifth tied for fifth with Southern Methodist's Amy Ruengmateekhun.
Wisconsin's 54-hole score of 879 ties the Badger Invitational record set by Purdue in 2005. Wisconsin's 18-hole score of 282 marked a school and Badger Invitational record, while their 36-hole score of 582 set a Badger Invitational Record. Additionally, Carly Werwie's 54-hole score of 213 set a new school and Badger Invitational record, breaking the mark of 215 which was set by Wisconsin teammate Jessie Gerry in 2008.
Wisconsin's Alyssa Elliott finished tied for 15th, posting a 73-75-77--225. Jessie Gerry finished 18th with a 70-81-76--227. Freshman Kris Yoo finished tied for 19th with a 74-80-74--228.
Playing as an individual, Alexis Nelson finished tied for seventh with a 73-74-74--221. Ellie Arkin, also playing as an individual, finished tied for 34th with a 75-80-80--235.
"This should definitely give us confidence going forward," Oehrlin said. "The players handled everything very well. We saw today that we had preparation early in the round and finished strong. The fact that we had the right frame of mind and our approach was rewarded was great to see."
Wisconsin is back in action on October 4-5 at the Johnny Imes Invitational, held at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri. UW first of 18 teams in that tournament a year ago posting a 908.
