MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's track and field team eased into the 2011 indoor season Friday at the Badger Track Classic with four teammates doing anything but taking it easy in the pentathlon.

David Grzesiak won the pentathlon with 3,896 total points, just short of the career-best score of 3,922 that ranks him No. 3 in school history.

To do so, he had to hold off teammate and redshirt freshman Japheth Cato, who finished second with a colligate-best score of 3,821 points -- the fifth-best mark in UW history. They were followed by junior Ian Jansen, who took third with 3,296 points. Junior Derek Steinbach only competed in the first three events.

Grzesiak started off running a 8.47 in the 60-meter hurdles and posted a mark of 21 feet, 10 inches in the long jump before finishing strong over the final three events to overcome Cato's early lead.

He threw 41-2 1/2 in the shot put, trailing behind Steinbach's 46-7 1/2. He and Cato then battled to a draw in the high jump by each clearing 6-8.

Grzesiak finished the competition by running away with the 1,000 meters, finishing in 2:44.31. Cato came in second by clocking in at 2:52.62, while Jansen finished just behind in 2:53.62.

The Badgers also hosted a discus throw exhibition in the McClain Center, with both women and men competeing.

Taylor Smith won the women's event with a throw of 154 feet, 6 inches to finish ahead of freshman Angela Boushea, who competed unattached and went 140-7 to take second place. Brittany Alsum from Milwaukee grabbed a thrid-place finish just barely behind Boushea with a throw of 140-5.

In the men's event, freshman Danny Block took second at 173-8. Lance Brooks, who ranked No. 14 in the world last year, won the competition with a throw of 193-8 competing unattached.

Freshman Alex Thompson, also competing unattahced, finish third at 162-7.

The Badger Track Classic continues Saturday with a full slate of events, beginning with field events as 11 a.m., and running events at 11:30 a.m. The meet also includes DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Marquette, Milwaukee and Northern Illinois.
