MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men’s track and field team went the distance in its first meet on the road this season.
The Badgers did exceptionally well in the field events Saturday at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill., sweeping top honors in the long jump and triple jump.
Despite fielding a limited team in the event, the Badgers earned a runner-up finish in the seven-team meet with 164 points. Host Illinois won the event with 238 points.
Sophomore Paul Annear won the triple jump at 49 feet, 4 1/2 inches and also was the runner-up in the high jump with a clearance of 6-8 1/4. Teammate Pat Nichols also cleared 6-8 1/4 to be slotted in the third position.
Redshirt freshman Japheth Cato enjoyed similar success to Annear’s, winning the long jump with a personal-best leap of 23-9 1/2 and finishing second in the pole vault with a clearance at 15-11 3/4.
On the track, the Badgers took four of the top five places in the 400 meters. Andrew Milenkovski claimed the win in 49.68 seconds, with freshman Tyler Woloszyk third in 50.17, redshirt freshman Brett Hartman fourth in 50.37 and junior Brady Hammon fifth in 50.55.
Milenkovski was also a member of the second-place 4x400-meter relay team, along with teammates Drew Simmons, Hammon and Woloszyk.
Wisconsin also swept the top two spots in the 600 meters, with junior Grant Bughman taking the win in 1:19.46 and teammate Patrick Plank finishing runner-up and crossing the line at 1:21.26.
Rounding out UW’s day in the sprints was sophomore Gavin Robertson, who again showed his speed in the 200 meter by grabbing second place in a time of 21.80.
Sophomore Drew Shields took the win in the mile by turning in a time of 4:11.73, with teammate Alex Brill finishing fourth in 4:13.29.
Redshirt freshman Tim Hucke, earned second place in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:55.65.
Freshman Greg MacNeill made his Badgers debut by finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.15. Temi Ogunbodede also qualified or the finals in the 60 hurdles and finished fifth in 8.26.
The Badgers will return back home to host the Wisconsin Elite Invitational next weekend. The men’s pentathlon begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, with the meet resuming at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
