HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Overtime spoiled another Badger comeback as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team fell 2-1 Friday evening at Michigan Tech to open WCHA play.
Just as in the Badger’s first two matches, the opponent scored first, as the Huskies took a 1-0 advantage with 12:19 remaining in the second period. The goal came off a deflection over freshman goalie Landon Peterson’s shoulder by Huskie Freshman Tanner Kero.

After a period and a half and a few scoring chances, Wisconsin picked up its intensity half-way through period number two. Although the Badgers did not score in the period, the team found good scoring opportunities, with freshen Brad Navin and Joseph LaBate both coming close in the final minutes.
Wisconsin went on its first power play opportunity 2:40 into the third period, but the Badgers couldn’t find a decent scoring opportunity. The team would only have to wait another five minutes though to find that opportunity. With 12:36 left, patience paid off and Wisconsin evened the score on a Tyler Barnes goal.
Barnes grabbed the puck along the goal line to the right of Huskie goalie Josh Robinson, skated in front and put it in the net to lock the Badgers in a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Mark Zengerle and Junior Justin Schultz assisted the score. Schultz’s assist was his fourth this season.
Three minutes later the Badgers faced another great opportunity as Schultz set up Zengerle in the slot with a wide open net, but the puck skipped over Zengerle’s stick.
Overtime was scoreless until 2:53 when Jordan Baker pushed home the puck into an empty net after a collision behind the Badger goal. UW goaltender Landon Peterson ended up on the ice and Brett Olson found Baker along in front.
In his second start for the Badgers, Peterson finished the night with 36 saves. Michigan Tech’s Robinson saved 23 shots.
Wisconsin went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Michigan Tech failed to convert a power play on two chances.
The Badgers head back to the ice in Houghton, Mich., Saturday evening as they look for the series split. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
