MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women’s hockey goaltender Alex Rigsby has been named the WCHA’s Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
The sophomore from Delafield, Wis., made a total of 52 saves for a .912 save percentage over the past weekend as the No. 1 Badgers hosted the then-No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers.
In the first game of the weekend series, Rigsby helped lead her team to a 3-2 victory, making crucial saves and helped the Badgers kill off five penalties. As the Gophers mounted a late rally in an attempt to even the score, Rigsby made 12 saves in the third period to hold on to the Badger victory.
On Sunday, she made 27 saves, including 12 in the first period. The Badgers would lose the game by a score of 3-2, but Rigsby’s performance in net gave the Badgers an opportunity to win.
Rigsby has started off the season with a 5-1-0 record posting a 1.68 goals against average. She has amassed a total of 118 saves for a .929 save percentage.
Heading out on their first road trip of the season, the Badgers travel to Minnesota Duluth this weekend for a conference matchup against the No. 5/6 Bulldogs. The games will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
