Postgame Quotes
Wisconsin vs. UMKC
Kohl Center - Madison, Wis.
Nov. 22, 2011
Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan
On making 13 3-pointers:
“When they go in, it’s a thing of beauty isn’t it? But those were the open shots. Again you still have to take what the defense gives you. We got 30 points in the paint, that’s a lot. It’s more than what we were getting last year, but again maybe not as big a team, different type personnel and their bigs could shoot it too. (Kirk) Korver can shoot the three, he stepped out and hit one or two. If that is what they are giving us, we’re going to take them and we will try to play off that inside also. I thought we skipped the ball well, we went side, top-side pretty well too. If you keep the defense moving you’re going to get some looks."
On ball movement:
"We talk about that all the time, not just this year. Teams take on a certain personality and you search for your strengths and that’s what we’re still doing. But so far that idea of creating help situations and finding the guy that was left, our guys have been doing a pretty good job of that."
On guard rebounding:
"Sometimes when the other team is having trouble shooting the ball and they are hitting the rim, there are longer rebounds and your guards are going to be involved some more. Plus our bigs made sure their bigs didn’t get the rebound. Sometimes rebounding statistics can be deceiving as to who is getting them and who is not because the bigs are doing such a good job keeping their guys away from the glass. The guards are there to clean up the mess and our guards have always rebounded pretty well."
On tying Walter Meanwell for second on UW’s all-time wins list and it being a reflection of the team:
"Yeah and that’s what I told the team. Just in case you guys are asked anything about it. I thanked them for being a part of something bigger than any individual, and that is team play. They happen to put numbers up and they have records and they do those type of things, but lets cut right to the chase, Doc Meanwell was a hell of a coach, great teacher and he was a doctor. I pretend I’m a doctor sometimes diagnosing what you should do about a blister and then Henry (Perez-Guerra) gets mad at me so I can’t do that anymore."
Junior F Mike Bruesewitz
On where the team is after the first four games:
"I think we're doing alright, just trying to get better everyday. We're coming together as a team. I don't know how many assists we have, but we've had a ton of assists every game. We're sharing the ball really well, and we're playing really good team basketball. Defensively, we're implementing our younger guys, and we're trying to get those guys to follow our rules. There's a reason why we have those rules, because they work. Defensively, we're getting there, and offensively, we're sharing the ball and being a solid team. We have a lot of guys that are scoring, too. It's easy when a lot of guys can put the ball in the basket, and it makes it harder to guard us too."
On what halftime speeches have been like this year:
"They've been the same as normal. Nothing really changes around here. He [head coach Bo Ryan] comes in and tells us what we're doing wrong, what we're doing right, and what we need to tweak a little bit. The halftime speeches have been the same since my freshman year. Coach Ryan doesn't change too much."
On how they've put games out of reach early:
"It just shows we're coming out sharp. We're making sure we're stepping on throats early and letting them know they're not going to come in here and out-work us. That's the biggest thing. We're beating teams by out-working them. That's always a positive. I feel like if we keep doing that, if we keep out-playing teams, we'll be where we want to be at the end of the year."
On if the things the team is doing now will help them when they face North Carolina:
"I think so. I don't know the date of the North Carolina game and I don't know the date of the Marquette game. That's an honest answer. People always ask me who we play next, but until we get the scouting report, I honestly don't know. It really doesn't matter who we're playing, to have a `1' next to their name or not. We just need to make sure we're getting better every day and making sure we're doing the stuff to get where we want to be. The stuff we're doing now is the stuff we'd be doing regardless if we're playing North Carolina. We're just trying to be the best team we can be."
Junior F Jared Berggren
On what was different in his shooting tonight:
"I don't know if there was anything different. I've been doing the same things, trying to get some shots in earlier today, and during the shoot-around I felt pretty good. My teammates were just finding me in open spaces, and I was finally able to knock them down today. It felt good."
On what happened on the one shot he missed:
"I don't know. That was probably the easiest one. I was two feet from the basket and couldn't put it in. Luckily, I didn't let it get to me. I think it was our first shot of the game, but luckily we got things going after that."
On how they've put games out of reach early:
"I think Mike (Bruesewitz) pretty much said it there. We're just trying to focus on our stuff, working hard, out-working teams, trying to take care of the ball. Tonight we had eight turnovers, and coach will say that's eight too many. There's always room for improvement no matter what team we're playing. We just want to try to be sharp every night, work hard and execute our stuff. So far we've done a pretty good job at that."
UMKC Head Coach Matt Brown
On how Wisconsin moved the ball:
"They move the ball extremely well. Coming into the game I think they had a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio, shooting the ball about 40 percent from three and 50 percent from the field. I think they're really underrated in their efficiency in the half-court offense."
On how it is defending Wisconsin and all their three-point shooters:
"Usually we have about five guys who can step away from the basket and shoot well, too. Tonight we didn't shoot nearly as well, and I think that had a lot to do with their defense. But, it makes it very hard when they have five guys on the floor that can shoot it consistently."
On the play of Wisconsin's guards:
"The big thing is the way Jordan Taylor takes care of the ball. He has a six-to-one turnover ratio, I think, on the year, so it's unbelievable how he takes care of the ball."
