ST. CLOUD, Minn.-- Wisconsin traveled to St. Cloud State Friday night for its second road series of the season, and fell 7-2 to the Huskies at the National Hockey Center in the first game of the weekend.
The Badgers (4-5-0, 3-4-0 WCHA) had two scoring opportunities early in the first period, drawing a penalty 1:15 into the game, and another four minutes later. Both power plays produced little offense for Wisconsin and no great scoring opportunities.
St. Cloud State (4-4-1, 2-1-0 WCHA) went on the power play with 9:11 left in the period though and the Huskies took advantage of their opportunity, scoring with 7:30 left in the first to go up 1-0.
Just over three minutes later, the Huskies made it a 2-0 lead. The goal came on just the fourth shot for St. Cloud in the game.
It took less than a minute though for the Badgers to put themselves back in the game. With 3:21 left in the period, junior Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) collected a pass from sophomore Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) in front of the goal and ripped it through SCSU goaltender Ryan Faragher for the score.

At the start of the second period, it was St. Cloud getting an early power play, following a penalty on freshman Joseph LaBate (Eagan, Minn.) just 17 seconds in.
Just under a minute later, junior John Ramage (St. Louis) committed another penalty for the Badgers, giving the Huskies the 5-on-3 advantage.
Wisconsin’s penalty kill held strong, however, and freshman goalie Landon Peterson (Oregon, Wis.) put together some of his best play of the night, defending shot after shot on goal to end the penalty unharmed.
With 13:55 left in the second period, LaBate was called for his second penalty in the game. Although St. Cloud failed to score with the man advantage, the Huskies took a 3-1 lead just 13 seconds out of the penalty.
Just as the Badgers came back quickly after falling behind 2-0 in the first, Wisconsin again dug itself out of the two-goal deficit fast, scoring just 35 seconds later.
Sophomore Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) took the puck down the far side of the ice before centering the puck to freshman Matt Paape (Appleton, Wis.). Paape wasted no time taking the pass and slapping it in the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Despite a power-play opportunity with 8:23 left in the second, the Badgers failed to even the match before St. Cloud regained a two-goal lead.
With 5:23 left in the period, the Huskies put their fourth goal past Peterson to take a 4-2 lead. That score stuck for the rest of the second period.
St. Cloud State entered the third period on a power play that carried over from the end of the second and took advantage quickly, increasing the lead to 5-2 a minute into the third.
The Badgers found one of their best opportunities following a St. Cloud five minute major penalty 4:15 into the third period. But five minutes went by with few scoring chances for Wisconsin, and the score remained 5-2 in favor of St. Cloud.
With 9:42 left, the Badgers went on a 4-on-3 advantage, but the Huskies took the puck on a breakaway and scored to take a 6-2 lead.
St. Cloud State made it 7-2 with 2:31 left in the game.
The Badgers went 0-for-5 on the power play, while St. Cloud State converted twice on six chances.
The Huskies outshot Wisconsin 37-28, with UW’s Peterson collecting 30 saves. SCSU’s Ryan Faragher made 26 saves.
The Badgers and Huskies match up again in game two Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
