MADISON, Wis. – With the start of championship season just a week away, the Wisconsin men’s track and field team attempted to work out some final kinks Friday at the Red & White Open.
The Badgers, who will head to the Big Ten indoor championships next weekend in Champaign, Ill., laid down several personal-best performances in The Shell.
Junior Kyle Jefferson won the 200 meters with a new personal-best 21.73 seconds. Junior Brady Hammon earned the second-place finish by crossing the line in 22.16, sophomore Gavin Robertson finished third in 22.26 and senior Chas DeMers finished fourth with a time of 22.36.
Redshirt freshman Japheth Cato won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 2 ¼ inches, recording personal best. Teammate Josh Flax earned second-place finish and posted also a new personal best with a jump of 23-8 3/4, while junior David Grzesiak finished fifth with a mark of 21-10 1/4 and junior Ian Jansen recorded a new career best with a jump of 21-7 1/2.
Three Badgers competed in the 600 meters, with redshirt freshman Tim Hucke taking the win by crossing the line in a personal best in 1:20.44. Freshman Brett Hartman scored a second-place finish with a time of 1:20.56, junior Pat Plank finished in third place at 1:20.85 and freshman Pat Moakley ran a new all-time best at 1:22.66 to finish sixth.
Junior Temi Ogunbodede won the 60-meter hurdles by running the eighth-fastest time for UW history at 8.01.
Senior Andrew Milenkovski won the 400 meters, crossing the line in 49.30. Freshman Matt McKenna, competes unattached, won the mile in 4:11.97 while freshman Jake Erschen, also competing unattached, finished second in 4:12.04.
In the field events senior Pat Nichols won the high jump with a final clearance of 6-8 3/4 and sophomore Paul Annear had a second-place finish with a jump of 6-6 3/4.
Freshman Dan Block won the shot put with a throw of 53-10 ¼.
The Badgers are back in action next weekend, Feb. 26-27, when they head to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the 2011 Big Ten Indoor Championships, events begin at 1:30 on Saturday.
