MADISON, Wis. -- With rival Minnesota (13-12-5, 10-10-4 WCHA) in town, fans at the sold-out Kohl Center were part of a playoff-type atmosphere, featuring back-and-forth scoring, a frenzied overtime period, and in the end, a 3-3 tie between the Badgers (19-11-4, 11-10-3 WCHA) and the Gophers.
In the first period, Minnesota scored first at 13:06 of the period for a power-play goal. Wisconsin goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) made a kick save on the initial shot, but Nate Condon put home the rebound.

Wisconsin did not let the Gopher lead stand for long, answering just 17 seconds later. Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) fed a pass into the slot for the crashing Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.). Schultz's wrist shot then deflected off a Gopher defenseman and past UM's goalie Kent Patterson to knot the game at 1-1.
In the second period, the Badgers took the lead. Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.) received a hooking penalty, which the Badgers successfully killed off. As Johnson got out of the box, Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) sent a long pass down the ice to spring Johnson on a breakaway. He deked to his backhand and put the puck into the net 3:25 into the second period.
Minnesota had multiple chances to get back to even, but saw them foiled. One shot was confirmed, after review, to have hit the crossbar and bounced out, and another attempt was saved by Bennett as he desperately got back to his feet after being knocked to the ground.
Eventually, the Gophers tied the game at 2-2. Jacob Cepis put a wrist shot on net, and Jake Hansen deflected it into the net at 12:37 of the second period. The Gophers had another good chance at the end of the period, but the Badgers successful killed off Minnesota's 5-on-3 advantage to give the UW some momentum heading into the locker room.
However, it was Minnesota who scored first in the third period, just 44 seconds into the stanza. Jacob Cepis took a long pass from Cade Fairchild to go on a breakaway, scoring to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead.
But, once again, the Badgers had an answer.
For the game's-tying goal, the Badgers got a spark from a surprising source, with freshman Jefferson Dahl (Eau Claire, Wis.) scoring the first goal of his Wisconsin career at a huge moment. Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) carried the puck behind the net, and sent a pass in front. Dahl was there, and he put in a backhander for the game's final goal at 3:06 of the third period.
The game's conclusion was tense, but neither team found the net again. The Badgers had the only shot in the overtime period, as Justin Schultz got the lone chance on net. In the end, the game finished as a 3-3 draw.
Brett Bennett made 28 saves for Wisconsin to go to 5-2-3 on the year. Kent Patterson, who stopped 32 shots, is 11-7-5.
The Badgers outshot the Gophers 35-31. Minnesota was 1-for-7 on the power play, while UW was 0-for-5.
Next weekend the Badgers make their final regular season road trip, heading into an important WCHA series at St. Cloud State. Games on Friday and Saturday are at 7 p.m. (CT).
