MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s tennis team (11-7, 2-2 Big Ten) was defeated by No. 8 Michigan, 7-0, at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Sunday. Michigan won all doubles and singles matches, and only gave up one set in the entire dual.
The Wolverines began the matchup with an early 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point by sweeping all doubles matches.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Hannah Berner and senior Jessica Seyferth lost just their third doubles match of the season to Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, 8-2.
Freshman Jenny Hois and redshirt junior Alaina Trgovich also lost by the same margin, falling to No. 8-ranked Denise Muresan and Brook Bolender at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Aleksandra Markovic and freshman Nicky Stracar also fell at No. 3 doubles but put up the best fight against their Michigan opponents. The duo lost 8-4 to Sam Critser and Michelle Sulahian.
At No. 5 singles, Seyferth was the first Badger to lose, falling to Tatsuno in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Michigan soon after took a 3-0 overall lead with another victory at No. 4 singles where Berner dropped a 6-0 first set and 6-2 second set to No. 69-ranked Critser.
Michigan then clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-2 victory by No. 98-ranked Taney over Stracar.
The Wolverines tacked on another victory at No. 1 singles where Hois lost in straight sets to No. 7-ranked Muresan. Despite winning the first two games of the first set and first game of the second, Hois lost 6-2, 6-3.
Markovic then lost in a match against Sulahian that went to three sets at No. 6 singles. Markovic easily won the first set, 6-1, but could not hold on dropping the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-6 (6). Markovic was the only Badger to win a set against Michigan.
The final match came down to a tiebreaker in the second set at No. 2 singles. Trgovich lost her first set to No. 73-ranked Bolender, 6-3, but fought her way to a tiebreaker in the second. At one point in the second set, Trgovich led 4-1, but eventually lost the set 7-6 (3).
