MADISON, Wis. -– Wisconsin men’s hockey has its 36th and 37th All-Americans as defensemen Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, British Columbia) and Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) were added to the illustrious list on Friday. In becoming the third and fourth Badger defensemen in three years to earn All-America recognition, Schultz and Gardiner also become the fourth and fifth defensemen in the Mike Eaves’ coaching era to gain the distinction.

Schultz, one of the top-10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award which is handed out to the nation’s top college hockey player, completed his sophomore year as the Badgers’ leading scorer with 47 points. The Insidecollegehockey.com Defenseman of the Year was also the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-College Hockey News First Team.

A First-Team All-WCHA pick, Schultz tallied 18 goals during the season, the most for any defenseman in the country since the 2002-03 season and tied for the second most by a defenseman in Wisconsin history, one off the school record. During the recently completed season, Schultz tallied Wisconsin’s first hat trick by a defenseman since 1992, and also snapped the Badgers 26-game overtime drought with the game-winning goal against Canisius on Jan. 8. The streak dated back to the 2007 WCHA Final Five. His 27 power-play points rank second in the nation among all student-athletes.

Gardiner, a 2011 Second-Team All-WCHA selection, currently ranks second in the nation among defensemen with 41 points. One of just four rear guards in the country to average better than a point per game, he is also one of just five rear guards to reach double-figures in goals with his 10 markers.

The swift-skating Gardiner improved 18 points from his sophomore season, while staying among the best plus-minus players in the nation. He once again ranks among the nation’s leaders with a plus-21 in 41 games played. The WCHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 29, he posted scoring streaks of six, five and four games during the year.

Following the UW season, Gardiner signed a professional contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and currently skates with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. For his Badger career, he skated in 121 games, scoring 19 goals and 56 assists for 75 points. He also finished plus-50 for his three-year Badger career.
