Badgers qualify for finals at Knecht Cup

April 9, 2011

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3 Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team finished the first day of competition at the Knecht Cup, held on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., on Saturday.

In addition to qualifying seven boats for five grand finals, The Badgers will defend their titles in the women’s lightweight eight and women’s frosh/novice eight grand finals Sunday morning.

“It was a pretty successful day,” said varsity head coach Erik Miller, who also noted that the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight crews are moving on to the finals against heavyweight opponents.

To get there, the varsity eight finished second in the quarterfinals in 7:11.13, falling only to Grand Valley State (Mich.), who finished in 7:07.73. West Virginia, who will be joining the Badgers in the grand final, finished in a close third in 7:11.61.

UW also came in second in the semifinals, finishing in 6:52.47 to Duke’s 6:48.03.

The second varsity eight had a little easier path to the grand final, as the Badgers won their quarterfinal heat in 7:25.21, besting second-place Drexel by 27 seconds. They also won the semifinals with the fastest time among all competitors (6:58.55).

The novice squad finished the day on top of the standings in its races to get to the grand final. The Badgers also ended the quarterfinal race with a large margin of victory, beating runner-up North Carolina by 25 seconds to come in at 7:20.30.

The varsity four raced to a second-place finish in its quarterfinal heat to finish in 8:45.32 and a sixth-place finish in the semifinal in 8:41.74. The Badgers will race in the third-level varsity four final.

The Badgers stood out in the women’s lightweight eight race, qualifying all three boats entered to the grand final on Sunday morning.

Wisconsin’s ‘C’ boat won the first semifinal in 6:52.94, almost eight seconds ahead of the Badgers’ ‘A’ boat (7:00.24). UW’s ‘B’ boat, meanwhile, finished runner-up to Bucknell’s ‘A’ boat in the second semifinal, clocking in at 7:03.60.

“It’s pretty exciting to have three boats in the (lightweight eight) final,” said Miller.

“It will be fun to see how some of the boats do against the heavyweight competition.”
