MADISON, Wis. – After a day of close races all across the board, the Wisconsin women’s openweight rowing team won the Big Ten Double Dual on Lake Ovid near Laingsburg, Mich., on Saturday.
The 10th-ranked Badgers beat out No. 8 Michigan State and No. 14 Michigan in head-to-head duals, while both MSU and Michigan defeated Minnesota to finish 1-1 on the day. Wisconsin won four of six races against both the host Spartans and the Wolverines to come out on top. UW won 36-33 against Michigan State and 42-27 against Michigan using the Big Ten's scoring system.
“We had a good day today,” said head coach Bebe Bryans. “We had a lot of successful races, and there’s some really good competition out there in the Big Ten.”
The novice squads got their first taste of collegiate competition on Saturday.
Although the second novice eight finished the day with two close losses, the novice eight was one of three boats that won against both opponents. The crew, led by coxswain Elizabeth Parker, won its race against MSU by finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.99 to the Spartans’ 7:06.95. They had a closer race against Michigan, winning by just over a second in 6:50.52.
The second varsity four also went undefeated on the day, winning their race against Michigan State by almost 15 seconds (7:41.86 to 7:56.40). Although the Badgers came out of the afternoon race with just under a five second victory, they prevented the Wolverines, who entered two boats in the event, from getting all six possible points in the race.
The second varsity eight finished the double dual with two of the closest wins among all competitors. The Badgers, led by coxswain Jane Roberts, bested the Spartans by almost two seconds in 6:46.64 before squeezing out a win against Michigan by just over one second in 6:47.24.
“We were able to pull out some wins that were close races, and we’re really happy about that,” said Bryans. “That shows that the really hard work that we (put in) all winter and the fitness that we have has paid off.”
Despite not finishing undefeated, the varsity crews gave the Badgers points where it mattered the most.
The varsity four won six points for Wisconsin by winning its race against Michigan State by six seconds. The Badgers clocked in at 7:30.23 to the Spartans’ 7:36.40.
The varsity eight, meanwhile, bested Michigan in both squads’ final race of the day by finishing in 6:41.26. The three-second win gave the Badgers 18 points and all but clinched the win against the Wolverines.
Although Bryans is happy with the wins, she knows that her teams have room for improvement, especially with such a quick turnaround before their next competition, the Lake Natoma Invitational next weekend.
“Rowing wise, we have a lot of work to do, but now that we’re back on the water more often, (improving our form) is our first order of business.”
