MADISON, Wis. -- Throwers from the Wisconsin men’s and women’s track and field teams have used the past two seasons to rewrite their school record books.
Two Badgers used an even more accelerated timeframe Friday.
It took less than an hour for to topple school records in both the men’s and women’s discus as UW swept the invitational sections of the event Friday at the Wisconsin Twilight Invitational.
Freshman Dan Block surpassed his own school mark on the men’s side with a winning throw of 192 feet, 6 inches before sophomore Taylor Smith followed with an effort 172-10 to win the women’s competition.
Block’s performance marked the fourth time this season the freshman has matched or topped the Badgers’ school record in his last six meets.
Smith, meanwhile, set a new school standard for the second time this season.
Block’s throw won the men’s invitational section by nearly five feet and put three athletes with UW ties in the top five. Redshirting freshman Alex Thompson threw 163-5 to finish third and senior Brandan Bettenhausen posted a mark of 155-6 to take fifth.
On the women’s side, Smith’s throw won the competition ahead of teammate Sunni Massop, who claimed the runner-up spot with a mark of 157-6.
Senior Brian Giese claimed a third event win for the Badgers by taking the top spot in the men’s hammer throw. Giese, who set UW’s school record in the event last month, won by nearly 24 feet with his effort of 185-8.
The Badgers got strong performances from three freshmen in women’s hammer throw.
