MADISON, Wis. -- With one week left until the Big Ten championships, the Wisconsin women's track and field team wrapped up their last-chance preparations Saturday at the Wisconsin Twilight Invitational.
Friday's events centered strong performances from sophomore Taylor Smith and freshman Angela Boushea, and the duo was right back at it Saturday.
Smith topped her own school recordwith a throw of 172 feet, 10 inches to win the invitational section of the discus on Friday.
In Saturday's events, Smith came out on top again with win in the shot put. Smith threw 51-0 3/4 to score the victory ahead of teammate Jasmine Boyer, who came in second by posting a personal-best mark of 50-7 1/4. Her throw also takes her to No. 4 on the UW all-time performance list.
Boushea came back into competition with a throw of 45-11 1/4 for fourth place.
Including the pair of victories for Smith, Wisconsin claimed a total of nine wins in their regular-season finale at the McClimon Complex.
Senior Sunni Massop also was part of the tally with her win in the discus. Massop threw 149-6 for the victory, topping her nearest competition by 10 feet.
In the javelin, freshman Elaina Mezzasalma took the event win with a throw of 129-11.
Junior Jordan Helgren competed in the triple jump and continued the trend with a win. Helgren leapt a season-best 40 feet, 7 1/2 inches for the top spot. The mark also puts her in the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten rankings.
Freshman Laura McGinnis competed unattached and jumped 38-2, earning her second place.
The Badgers accomplished a complete sweep in the high jump, led by former Badger Megan Seidl's victory with a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches. Junior Monika Jakutyte matched Seidl's clearance but took second place on the criteria of misses.
Junior Jessica Flax claimed third as one of two Badgers to successfully clear the bar at 5-5 1/4, along with sophomore Dorcas Akinniyi, who finished fourth
Freshman Deanna Latham jumped 5-3 1/4 to take fifth place.
Flax and Latham appeared together in the long jump, as well. Latham leapt a distance of 17-8 to claim the win, with Flax second at 17-7.
Latham went solo in the 100-meter hurdles, leaving her competition in the dust and pulling into the finish nearly two hurdles ahead with a winning time of 14.48 seconds.
Another of UW's most impressive wins also came in a hurdles race, with sophomore Carrie Edmunds winning the 400-meter hurdles. Edmunds cut down her personal-best time by more than two seconds to take the win with a mark of 1:02.53.
In the 400 meters, sophomore Brittney Harper ran a lifetime-best time, as well. Clocking in at 55.07, Harper took second place and ran the seventh-fastest time in UW history.
Individual events weren't the only place the Badgers shined, however, with the 4x100-meter relay team scoring a winning performance, as well. Senior Egle Staisiunaite, sophomore Jameice DeCoster, junior Katie Duchow and freshman Maya Vazquez, combined to run a winning time of 46.72.
With their last regular-season meet behind them, the Badgers will pack up and head for Iowa City, Iowa, next weekend to take on the competition at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Results can be found on UWBadgers.com.
