MADISON, Wis. -- Junior Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) scored two goals and picked up two more assists as the Badgers (8-9-2, 4-8-2 WCHA) downed RIT (10-7-2, 7-4-2 Atlantic Hockey) by a 6-3 score on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
The victory marked the 200th win as a head coach for Mike Eaves.
“The kids did a really classy thing when we handed out the game puck,” Eaves said. “And it happened to go to Mr. (Justin) Schultz, he scored two goals and two assists. He said ‘we’d also like to recognize you coach’ and he threw me a puck with the 200th win on it and my name. That’s pretty cool.”
With his four points Friday, Schultz collected his 101st career point, becoming the first Badger defenseman since Brian Rafalski in 1994-95 to reach the 100-point mark. Schultz’s two goals also give him 35 for his career, putting him in a tie win Sean Hill for fourth most all time among defensemen in school history.
“Obviously, it’s pretty cool,” Schultz said. “Not many people do it, especially as a defenseman. It’s quite an honor, but more importantly we got the win.”

Schultz got the scoring going early for Wisconsin at the 5:50 mark of the first period with one of the most impressive goals this season. Taking the puck down the ice himself, Schultz was knocked to the ice splitting two RIT defenders, but found room five-hole from his knees on RIT goalie Shane Madolora for the score.
With just under seven minutes left in the first period though, RIT evened the score up on a goal from Matt Garbowsky.
The Badgers took the lead back in the second period on a power play, as Schultz notched what looked to be his second goal of the night 8:46 into the period. It was later determined Michael Mersch deflected the puck before it went into the net and the sophomore from Park Ridge, Ill., was credited with the goal.
Schultz did still collect his second point on the night while Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) was also awarded an assist.
That assist stretched Zengerle’s point scoring streak to 18-straight games, passing Wisconsin hockey legend and current Badger women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson for second all time in program history. Zengerle is now just three games short of Eaves’ record 21-game streak.
“That’s definitely pretty cool,” Zengerle said of passing Johnson. “I think it will sink in more probably years down the road when I look back at what I’ve done, but he’s the best or the second best in Badger history so it’s pretty cool.”
Less than four minutes later, Schultz collected his second goal of the evening and put the Badgers ahead 3-1. On his first night back since suffering an injury Oct. 28, junior Derek Lee (North Vancouver, B.C.) picked up an assist, along with junior John Ramage (St. Louis).
Wisconsin drew its fifth penalty of the game just eight seconds into the third period and nine seconds into the man advantage, freshman Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) scored his first goal as a Badger to put his team up 4-1. Schultz and Zengerle were credited with the assists.
The Tigers made the game interesting a few minutes later, scoring two goals within 45 seconds of each other. The scores, which came at the 4:42 and 5:27 marks of the final period, cut the Badgers lead to just one goal.
With under 10 minutes to play in the game however, sophomore Jefferson Dahl (Eau Claire, Wis.) scored and Wisconsin led 5-3. Sophomore Keegan Meuer (Madison, Wis.) and the assists.
Less than four minutes later, Meuer scored his fourth goal this season and second point of the night, giving the Badgers a comfortable 6-3 lead. Dahl and sophomore Frankie Simonelli (Benseville, Ill.) collected the assists.
Freshman goalie Landon Peterson recorded 30 saves Friday evening, the most for the Oregon, Wis., native in a victory this season.
The Badgers and Tigers finished even in shots on goal at 33 apiece. RIT was 0-2 on the power play while Wisconsin went 3-6 with the man advantage.
The Badgers look for the sweep against RIT Saturday night at the Kohl Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
