MADISON, Wis. – The UW men’s swim team made sure its first night in Iowa City, Iowa was one to remember, capturing two NCAA ‘B’ qualifying times as well as two school records to begin the Big Ten Championships.
Drew TeDuits, Tariq Miller, Dan Lester, and Wes Lagerhausen teamed up in the 200 medley relay to claim the first ‘B’ qualifying time for Wisconsin, finishing the event in sixth place (1:26.87). The time was a season-best for the relay, cutting their previous top time down by almost three seconds.
The 800 free relay continued the impressive start for the Badgers, as Michael Weiss, Lester, Lagerhausen, and Garrett Mulchrone combined for a school-record and provisional qualifying time of 6:26.07 on their way to fifth place. The event was doubly special for Weiss, whose 1:34.99 split earned him a school-record in the 200 free as well.
“It was a great swim for us,” said head coach Whitney Hite. “The guys just swam so hard, and for Weiss to get two school records in one swim was phenomenal. The 800 free is my favorite relay and that’s going to become a point of pride for this program in years to come.”
It was an encouraging start for Wisconsin, which heads into day two with 54 points, good for a fourth-place tie with Minnesota, and 26 points behind meet-leading Michigan. Coming off of eighth-place finishes the past two years, the Badgers hope they can take a step forward this season.
“Certainly we’re aiming to do better than we’ve done in the past,” Hite said. “We’re going to fight, scratch and claw for every point we can get, and hopefully that puts us in a position to improve on our previous finishes.”
The Big Ten Championships will resume tomorrow at noon, with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 400 medley relay among the scheduled events.
“We’re off to a good start, and we’re going to try to carry that over to tomorrow,” Hite said. “The 400 medley relay, 500 free, and 200 IM will all be races to watch for us.”
