Swimming and Diving Head Coach Yuri Suguiyama named USA Swimming National Team Senior Director and Coach

Suguiyama departs after seven seasons

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin swim and dive head coach Yuri Suguiyama has been named the USA Swimming National Team Senior Director and Coach, announced by USA Swimming Wednesday afternoon.

Suguiyama spent seven seasons with the Badgers where he led the men and women to the upper echelon of the Big Ten champions, and developed a host of NCAA Champions, All-Americans, and Olympians.

In his seven seasons, Suguiyama totaled three NCAA Champions, 29 Big Ten Champions, 66 All-America Honors, 49 school records broken, three Top-20 NCAA finishes and three Top-15 NCAA finishes.

"We want to thank Yuri for his seven successful years at Wisconsin and congratulate him on this exciting new opportunity. Under Yuri's leadership, our program achieved success in and out of the pool and he is leaving Wisconsin swimming and diving in an even better place than when he arrived," Athletic Director Chris McIntosh said. "I'm proud of the role our program and student-athletes have had in helping Yuri earn this new position and wish him the best as he moves on to represent Team USA."

Suguiyama is no stranger to the national stage. Prior to joining Wisconsin in 2018, he was named Special Assistant to the National Team Director for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He also served as an assistant coach for the American squads at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships and 2015 World University Games. Following his Olympic assignment, Suguiyama served as men's head coach for Team USA at the 2016 FINA Short Course World Championships. Most recently, he was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2023 LEN Championships that took place in Dublin, Ireland.

A national search for a new Wisconsin swimming and diving head coach will be conducted immediately.
