MADISON, Wis.-- The Wisconsin women’s cross country team finished second out of seven teams in the Badger Opener Friday afternoon at the Zimmer Championship Course to open the 2013 season.
Northwestern, the only other Big Ten team in the field, came away with the victory in the 4-kilometer race and had the top two individual finishers and a team score of 45 points. The Badgers—who featured a mix of their “A” and “B” teams—finished with 57 points, which was 12 behind the Wildcats’ total.
Badgers junior and 2011 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Gabrielle Anzalone led the way for the young Badgers squad and finished seventh overall with a time of 14 minutes, 25 seconds. Sophomore Emma-Lisa Murphy, who won the competition last year in her first collegiate race, was the other Badgers runner to finish in the top ten. She placed ninth and finished with a time of 14:29.
Despite an outcome unlike the previous two seasons—the Badgers have posted perfect scores of 15 points in each of the last two years—head coach Jim Stintzi was more than pleased.
“It was pretty much what we expected,” Stintzi said. “The goal really was to try and keep the five together and to not kill ourselves this early in the year. That was their job, so it was good. I feel good about our performance today.”
Senior Erin Cawley finished 12th with a time of 14:32 in her Badgers debut while junior Anne Gregory placed 14th with a time of 14:34. Lavinia Jurkiewicz (14:36) was the final scorer for the Badgers and finished 15th overall. Colleen McNulty (14:36) and Rachel McNally (14:37) rounded out the Badgers runners and finished 16th and 17th, respectively.
Northwestern senior Michelle Moriset (14:14) ran away with the top individual performance while teammate Andrea Ostenso (14:19) was right behind her. Loyola (Ill.) took third place and finished with 61 points while in-state rival Marquette (66) took fourth. DePaul (154), Green Bay (187) and Edgewood College (205) rounded out the rest of the field.
The Badgers will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., and Whitewater, Wis., next Saturday, September 14th to compete in the Sycamore Invitational and the Warhawk Invitational. The Sycamore Invitational is set to begin at 10 a.m. while the Warhawk Invitational is slated for a 10:45 a.m. start. Coach Stintzi said the team will head into next weekend’s action with the exact same approach.
“The other five that we didn’t run and then a few of the same girls that are fighting for a spot in the top 12 will race next week and it’ll be the same principle. Try and keep it together, and try to do some team running together.”
