BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Thanks to goals by Katy Josephs and Baylee Wellhausen, the No. 2 Wisconsin women’s hockey team defeated Bemidji State, 2-1, on Friday night at the Sanford Center.

Wisconsin (7-2-0, 5-2-0-0 WCHA) outshot Bemidji State (4-3-0, 0-3-0-0 WCHA) 31-15 over the course of the game, and held a 9-2 shot advantage after the first period of action.

 Fast Facts
• The Badgers have now out-shot their opponents in eight of nine contests this season.
• Zgraja's first period assist was the first point of the year for the alternate captain.
• The victory marked the seventh straight over Bemidji State

With nine minutes remaining in the first, Josephs tallied her fourth goal of the season off assists from Sydney McKibbon and Katarina Zgraja to give the Badgers (7-2-0, 5-2-0-0) a 1-0 lead. It marked Josephs’ first goal since the Badgers’ opening series at Lindenwood.

“It felt really good to get that goal,” Josephs said. “I know the past couple games I haven’t been able to generate a lot, so I know the coaches switched up the lines and being able to put one in was a really good feeling, and knowing I still had that in me kind of, so that was really good.

Midway through the second, it looked like Bemidji State (4-3-0, 0-3-0-0 WCHA) tied the game, but the goal was waved off due to the puck being kicked into the net. Following the play, the Badgers doubled their lead as Wellhausen weaved through the Beaver defense and lit the lamp for the second time this year.

“Well, honestly it was all my line mates,” Wellhausen said. “(Emily) Clark and Karley (Sylvester) forechecked hard, the puck bounced out to me and I was pretty lucky to get the shot off, get the rebound and put it home. Thanks to them I got that goal.

Bemidji State cut into the UW lead with just over three minutes remaining, scoring on a power play. The Badgers were able to hold on thanks to a late penalty by Bemidji State, which put UW on the power play with 33 seconds remaining.

Ann-Renee Desbiens made 14 saves in net to earn her fifth win of the season, while BSU’s Brittni Mowat stopped 29 of the 31 shots she faced.

The Badgers were unable to convert on their three power-play opportunities, while the Beavers finished the game 1-for-4 with a man advantage.

The triumph marked UW’s seventh-straight against BSU, and UW’s 14th-consecutive true road win.

“We came out a little flat in the beginning, but once we got that period out of the way we came out hard and we remained aggressive,” Wellhausen said. “I think that was the most positive thing today.”

Wisconsin and BSU meet again on Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.
