FOX POINT, Wis.  --  The Badger women will leave Milwaukee with something to build on after finishing the Milwaukee Tennis Classic with a strong Sunday performance. UW took two of three doubles matches from Western Michigan before splitting rival Marquette in singles action.

Head coach Tina Samara’s squad opened the final day of the opening weekend picking up where it left off Saturday, more success against the Broncos.

Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Caroline Aleck and Meika Ashby, while Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau combined to win their third doubles match of the weekend, dispatching Yuriko Ono and Labina Petrovska, 8-3.

Samara said of first year Badgers Maria Avgerinos, Kelsey Grambeau, and Ekaterina Stepanova, and of the team as a whole, “I have no doubt all three of our newcomers are going to continue to play very well...This team has great chemistry, which will pay off for sure.”

In the afternoon, the Badgers battled their in-state foe Marquette to the tune of three victories of the six singles matches.

Badgers number one Lauren Chypyha handled Marquette's number one, Ana Pimienta, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Syracuse transfer Maria Avgerinos improved to 3-0 on the year, defeating Diana Tokar, who retired before the match went final. Avgerinos held a commanding 6-0, 5-0 lead.

Samara went on to talk about her team's potential, saying, “We have a lot to work with, a lot of talent on this team...We have seven players out there that are competing and want to win.”

Kelsey Grambeau has made the most of her opportunity to bounce back after an opening day loss to improve to 2-1 for the season, topping Aleeza Kanner 6-2, 6-3.

Anastasia Tripolskaya remained inactive Sunday in order to rest an ailing wrist.

The Badger women finished the tournament 11-8 in singles play, and 4-5 in doubles matches overall. They will look to build on this weekend and bring that strong finish to Minneapolis next Friday, Sept. 19 at the Gopher Invite.
