Sept. 20, 2014 MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's rowing programs opened up the fall season on Saturday with the Milwaukee River Challenge.
The Wisconsin lightweights brought a young squad to Milwaukee. Of the 30-person travel roster, 19 of the women were freshman. For the overall team, there is huge talent in the returners, including sophomore All-American
Gabriela Purman, and the national champion four from the 2013-14 season.
The Badgers had three eights competing and four boats racing in fours at the first regatta.
The University of Wisconsin Lightweight A boat took silver in the three-mile open eight race with a time of 16:50.99. The E boat came in right after, nabbing the bronze, with a completion time of 17:43.82. Wisconsin's last lightweight eight, the C boat, came in ninth place after 18:51.14.
Wisconsin's fours also had a nice showing in today's events. The B boat took fourth place, coming in at 19:33.82. In sixth place with a completion time of 19:40.84 was the lightweight E boat. The F boat ended up taking nith place after 20:04.2 of racing and the D boat came in 12th with a time of 20:27.82.
With the Milwaukee River Challenge under their belt, Wisconsin is looking forward to Head of the Rock. This will take place in Rockford, Illinois, on Oct. 12.
