Badgers remain undefeated in fall season

MADISON, Wis.- The Badger softball team continued recording big hits in their fall season, topping Highland 12-0 at Goodman Diamond on Friday.
Sarah Fonk started the game with a solid performance in the circle, allowing no hits in the first inning. But UW couldn't connect either, and both teams headed in to the second scoreless.
After a slow start, Wisconsin got things rolling in the second inning. Senior Marissa Mersch drilled a triple into center field, scoring Nyah Rodman to put the Badgers on the board first.
Mersch and senior Megan Tancill each added a run in the third to put Wisconsin up 3-0 after the second.
In the top of the third, Fonk didn't allow any hits with all three batters striking out swinging.
In the bottom of the third, Rodman hit a double for the Badgers, with Kelsey Jenkins and Chloe Miller running home. With bases loaded, senior Maria Van Abel doubled, allowing junior Ashley Van Zeeland and freshman Samantha Arents to score. In total, UW notched seven runs in the third to put the Badgers up 10-0 after three innings.
Wisconsin added two more runs in the fourth, while Rodman replaced Fonk on the mound for the fourth and fifth inning. She had a stellar performance on the hill allowing no hits and striking out three on the side to end the game.
Wisconsin ended the game with 13 total hits to Highland's one in front of 243 fans. Wisconsin returns to Goodman Diamond on Sunday to face Kirkwood Community in a doubleheader starting at 12.
