Coach Postgame Quotes
Wisconsin vs. Nebraska
Jan. 15, 2015
Kohl Center- Madison, Wis.
UW Head Coach Bo Ryan
On Bronson Koenig's performance:
"Well he played pretty well. We know he has ability, and his teammates know and trust him, since he's been on the floor in a lot of big situations in his year and a half here. The guys encouraged him the whole time, where you don't overdo it like 'Bronson, you nervous?' The teammates were good with him, the guys relaxed him and he knows what I expect since he's followed our program forever. He knows what his position is, he knows what it entails, so he did what I thought he would do."
On guarding Terran Petteway:
"It looks like neutralizing, but his shots weren't going down the same way. He hit some tough shots in the first half, but did he have any dunks of those 20? Did he have any layups of that 20? So were trying to get him to take tough shots and he was making tough shots. We're just trying to play those percentages, and they weren't going down the same way. He also didn't shoot the ball as much in the second half."
On filling in for Traevon Jackson:
"It was everything that you count on, that you expect. (Jackson's teammates) are good people, so they're going to rally, but it still doesn't mean Trae isn't going to be missed while he's out, but you just have to find ways. We talked about this before, but that string of 78 games with the same starting lineup -- I don't know if it's a record -- but it's a pretty good run. When that was changed, you try to fit guys in and work for the best. You don't hope for the best, you work for the best."
On Frank Kaminsky's return to the lineup:
"He said he was ready last Sunday, you heard him. If his first name was Freddy he would be 'ready Freddy,' but his name is Frank. He was ready, he's always ready. He wants to play."
On the team's shooting performance:
"We look at shot charts all the time, but look across the country, it's just basketball. They put that 3-point line in for a reason. When I look at games myself, I go 'wow, I just saw this team last week play, and they couldn't miss, but now they can't buy a shot.' If you find yourself watching a lot of college basketball games during the week, how many times do you find yourself saying that?
Before the 3-point line came in, with the ball movement, the dribble drive, posting up, having a big center with jump hooks and drop steps, but then the 3-point line created another game within a game. It's not like we say to the guys, 'alright, we're going to get up 25 threes in this game.' No, we are going to try to take what the defense gives us. Fortunately, we got to the line, which you need to do to get players in foul trouble on the other team when you can, maybe get them to the bench."
Nebraska Head Coach Tim Miles
On if there was one thing that changed from the first 18 minutes to the rest of the game:
"I think that the way they made 3-pointers was really the difference. When multiple - five different guys - combine for 11 3s and Frank (Kaminsky) goes 4-5 and hasn't made one in three or four games, it was hard. Because you have a gameplan and all of a sudden now they start hitting the 3s and your guys are like, 'Oh boy, is the gameplan good?' It doesn't feel like it. Just the way they're able to stretch us. Then we didn't guard the ball the way we needed to. I think we gave up like four dunks tonight, just on straight-line drives. We had some bigger guys. I was really impressed with Nigel Hayes, he had four assists. Bronson (Koenig) did his thing (and) he was really good. Frank (Kaminsky) is a Player of the Year guy, in my mind. You kind of expected that. Just about the time that you think you've got them all under control, (Sam) Dekker hits two in a row. When they had that one stretch, I thought that really hurt us midway through the second half. We had it down to four or six, and then it got away from us."
On his expectations for Bronson Koenig:
"The one thing is that I thought that we could get to him because he's a kid that hunts jumpers. He's been in fouling 10 times this year and last year combined. He's not in the paint causing problems, he's going to hunt jumpers. Usually on a kid that hunts jumpers, we've been able to get off and get over the top of him. I thought that they were doing such a good job, and Benny (Parker) got late, and they were throwing back over Benny (Parker) to Frank (Kaminsky), so we tried to put Terran (Petteway) on him a little bigger."
