MINNEAPOLIS -- Hockey Day Minnesota proved to disadvantage the Wisconsin men's hockey team (2-13-2, 0-3-1-1), as the Badgers were dropped, 5-2, by 16th-ranked Minnesota (11-7-2, 2-2-2-0), Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

In the first period, Minnesota peppered Badgers goaltender Joel Rumpel with 21 shots--one more than Friday night's 20-minute total--and scored three goals.
Travis Boyd scored the Gophers' first and third goals, the latter a being awarded somewhat controversially.
Sam Warning--U of M's other first-period goal scorer--drove to the net on a breakaway, making a forehand-backhand deke before colliding with Rumpel and sliding into the back boards. The puck sat inches from the goal line for a moment until a bounding Boyd simultaneously shoved the puck into the goal and a Wisconsin defender into the right post. The net came off its moorings and the referee, situated in perfect position to see the puck, immediately waved his arms to signal no goal.
But after a lengthy review, the call was reversed, granting the Gophers a three-goal lead.
Warning's goal, which game UM a 2-0 lead, was also reviewed, and despite replays appearing to show Minnesota's Hudson Fasching using pushing Rumpel out of position with his stick, the goal was allowed to stand.
Minnesota added two more goals in the second period.
UW showed spurts of life during the frame, ringing multiple shots off the post before finally getting on the board at the 15:27 mark.
Grant Besse stepped out of the right corner with the puck and initially shoved it into Wilcox's pads, but eventually got it to cross the goal line for his fifth score of the season.
The Plymouth, Minnesota, native tallied again in the third period on the power play, firing a wrist shot into the net from the left circle with the Badgers on a five-on-three advantage.
Rumpel finished with 45 saves--two shy of his career high which was tied last night. The senior stopped 92 of the 99 shots he faced during the series.
Wilcox made 24 saves, earning his 11th victory of the season.
Minnesota put 50 shots on goal for the first time since it defeated Robert Morris on March 29, 2014.
The Badgers return home for a series with Michigan next weekend. Friday's game, at 8 p.m. CT, will appear on Big Ten Network, while the Saturday finale, at 7 p.m. CT, can be seen on the Wisconsin Channel.
