Throwers, sprinters shine in Wisconsin's 2015 debut

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 15 Wisconsin men's track and field team kicked off the 2015 indoor season with a strong showing by both throws and sprints groups. The Badgers hosted the Wisconsin Open on Saturday at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell) where they won 7 of the 15 events.
Winning the weight throw was senior Scott Erickson, who threw a personal-best 68 feet, 1 inch. Erickson's throw ranks second in the Big Ten and 10th nationally this season, based on marks entering Saturday.
Sweeping the sprints titles was sophomore Ryan Davis. Davis won both the 60 meters and the 200 meters with the times of 6.93 seconds and 21.99, respectively. The 60 meters had a 1-2 punch of Davis and teammate James Stecker, who crossed the line in 7.14.
The 60 meters was one of three 1-2 finishes during the competition for the Badgers. The mile had the 1-2 punch of Joe McAsey, who finished in 4 minutes, 12.7 seconds, and Russell Sandvold, who followed shortly behind in 4:13.0.
The sprints team continued to dominate in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Stecker, Charlie Foss, Corbin Ellis and Aaron Thompson ran in a collective time of 3:24.21 to take the win.
Junior Sam Hacker finished first in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:56.57.
Shot put had the third 1-2 punch of the day where Andrew Brekke and Riley Budde both threw personal records. Brekke heaved the shot 53-3 1/2 to take the win and Budde threw for a mark of 52-8 3/4 for second place.
Competition continues for the Badgers next Saturday, Jan. 24, with Wisconsin hosting a dual meet against Minnesota at The Shell. Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT) with running events starting at noon.
