MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team didn't have to wait long for adversity to come their way this season.
With two of their seven players unable to participate in singles play, the Badgers knew it would be a tough road to a victory, but that wasn't going to stop them from giving it their all. UW played tough, but fell to Drake, 4-3, in its season-opener on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Center.Â
"A tough loss today for sure" head coach Tina Samara said. "We knew going into today it was going to be an uphill battle without Anastasia (Tripolskaya) and Ekaterina (Stepanova) in the singles lineup."
In doubles action, the pairing of Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau continued their run of success from the fall season, topping Tess Herder and Mariel Ante from Drake, 6-2, but DU grabbed the doubles point
In the number one singles spot, All-Big Ten junior Lauren Chyphya cruised past Ante, 6-1, 6-2, in the quickest match of the meet.Â
Also in singles, Maria Avgerinos exemplified the team's fighting spirit, defeating Nell Boyd 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. Meanwhile, Lauren Burich out played Drake's Adrienne Jensen, 6-4, 6-4, to pick up her first singles win of the season.
Despite falling in the match, Samara has no doubt the ceiling is high for this year's squad.
"The good news is if we can get everyone healthy, we will be a very different team."
