Sophomore goalkeeper made career-high 10 saves in shutout win at Rutgers
MADISON, Wis. – Adrian Remeniuk made his first start of the season count on the road at Rutgers last Friday night. The Wisconsin men's soccer goalkeeper made a career-high 10 saves and posted his third career shutout, which not only helped the Badgers claim a 1-0 double overtime win, but also earned him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades from the conference Tuesday.
His first league honor, the sophomore from Glenview, Illinois, pitched the first clean sheet of the season for the Badgers and helped the team begin Big Ten play with an undefeated 1-0 record on the road in a hostile environment against the Scarlet Knights.
"He showed poise, he made the saves that he needed to make look easy and he made a couple other great saves to keep us in it," head coach John Trask said. "That's what we expect from all of our goalkeepers. I think Adrian would be the first one to admit that it was a team shutout as well. Our defense blocked a lot of shots, helped him by being tough in front of goal and didn't allow easy looks.
"Still, Adrian did fantastic and to see him get rewarded for that type of performance is great."
Remeniuk becomes the first player to be named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week at Wisconsin since Chase Rau in 2012. Remeniuk is the first Big Ten Player of the Week on either side since AJ Cochran was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week in 2013.
Remeniuk started 10 games last season as a true freshman for the Badgers. He gathered 33 saves and posted two shutouts.
Wisconsin finishes off a four-game road stretch this weekend with a trip to face St. John's in Queens, New York, on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
