New Zealand native becomes 23rd Badger to become All-Big Ten Freshman
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer newcomer Sam Brotherton was named to the 2015 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, as the Big Ten Conference announced its All-Big Ten teams and individual honors on Friday.
Brotherton becomes the 23rd Badger in program history to earn all-freshman distinction. The Auckland, New Zealand, native has started all 16 games he played in this season. The only two games he missed were due to the fact that he had been called up to train with the New Zealand full national team and missed an early non-conference road trip with the Badgers.
Brotherton anchored a Wisconsin defense that tallied three shutouts this season.
One of the up-and-coming players in New Zealand's national team system, Brotherton was just called up this week as one of 19 players that will play for the senior All Whites against Oman on Friday, Nov. 13.
Brotherton attended Westlake Boys High School, where he played in a school-record 82 games for the First XI. A team captain as a senior at Westlake, he played in 27 games and had 15 goals for the First XI en route to earning school colors for soccer, the Golden Boot (First XI leading goal scorer), the Ken Armstrong Cup (greatest contribution to senior football) and the Colin Pascoe Cup (sportsmanship).
The Big Ten also recognized nine Sportsmanship Award honorees, which included Wisconsin senior defender Adam Lauko. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting.
The first round of the Big Ten tournament begins Saturday with a play-in game between No. 8 Michigan State and No. 9 Penn State. Four quarterfinal games are set to follow on Sunday, hosted by the top four seeds. No. 7 Wisconsin travels to play No. 2 Indiana at noon on Sunday in what will be a rematch of last weekend's road clash. The semifinal games and championship match will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed on Nov. 6 and Nov. 8, respectively.
