Feb. 27, 2015

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- The Wisconsin men's hockey team (4-21-4, 2-11-2-0) was shutout for the second-straight game, as No. 17 Michigan (18-11-0, 10-5-0-0) took down the Badgers, 3-0, Friday night at Yost Ice Arena.

Fast Facts
? Game marked 2nd-straight shutout loss for UW
? UW is now 0-3 against Michigan this year
? Joel Rumpel made 31 saves

The first period proved to be a stalemate, but each team had its scoring chances.

Wisconsin dominated the beginning of the period, while the Wolverines came on strong in the back half.

The Badgers' best chance may have been their first.

Aidan Cavallini laid a massive check on Breenan Serville who was carrying the puck around the net. The UW forward stole the puck, quickly looking up to find teammate Jason Ford open in front. Michigan goaltender Steve Racine denied the one-timer opportunity.

Another chance for Wisconsin came unexpectedly on its first power play.

Tim Davison took a shot from the left point, which tipped off a U of M player's stick at the top of the left circle and rung the crossbar.

Michigan nearly took the lead late in the first on an odd-man rush.

A shot wide of the net by UW rung around the right boards and sent the Wolverines on a 4-on-2.

Badgers' goalie Joel Rumpel made the initial save, but left a rebound on the right side with a wide-open net. The puck bounced on Michigan's Kevin Lohan preventing the Wolverines from capitalizing on the opportunity.

Michigan led, 11-7, in shots after 20 minutes.

An unfortunate turn of events put the Wolverines on top at the 1:35 mark of the second period.

Zach Hyman, standing below the UW goal line, sent a hard pass in front, which banked off Chase Drake's right skate and beat Rumpel top shelf.

Another quirky goal gave U of M a two-goal advantage about halfway through the third frame.

A scramble in front of the Badgers' goal mouth forced Rumpel into an awkward position. As the puck squirted free to Michigan's Hyman, the senior attempted a wraparound shot on the left side. Rumpel dove across the net to cover the play, but It ricocheted off the side post and out to the blue line.

The Wisconsin netminder did all he could to block the net, stacking his pads on top of one another and reaching his glove up, but a Zach Werenski's shot from the point snuck under Rumpel for the goal.

Wisconsin had scoring opportunities late in the contest.

In one instance, Racine denied multiple rebound attempts by the Badgers, but his best save of the game came against Jedd Soleway.

Cameron Hughes dodged a Michigan defenseman along the low left boards of the Wolverines' zone and picked his head up to see Soleway streaking down the slot. The freshman fed his linemate with a perfect pass in the slot, but Racine made the point-blank stop.

The U of M goaltender finished with 22 saves for his first shutout of the year. Rumpel made 31 stops in the loss.

Michigan added an empty-net goal with just over a minute to play to seal the game.

Wisconsin looks for revenge in the finale at 3 p.m., Saturday on BTN.
