MADISON, Wis. -- Taking the doubles point in dominant fashion, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 in the three matches, the Wisconsin women's tennis team (2-1) never looked back as they downed the Bowling Green Falcons (0-4) by a final score of 7-0 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The pair of Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau got their third victory of the year, defeating Bowling Green's Harley Hutchison and Megan Miller, 6-1, while Lauren Chypyha and her partner, Maria Avgerinos, topped Emily Witt and Leeah Floyd by the same score.Â
Ekaterina Stepanova took the court with Sydney Rider against Antonina Farrar and Sydney Seeley and the Badger duo escaped unscathed, winning 6-0.
In singles action the Badgers also excelled, taking the top two matches with Chypyha and Avgerinos each winning 6-0, 6-2 over Harley Hutchinson and Megan Miller, respectively.
In number three singles, Sidney Rider knocked off Emily Witt, 6-2, 6-0, while Kelsey Grambeau hit her way to a 6-0, 6-3 win to beat Bowling Green's Leeah Floyd in number four singles.
Ekaterina Stepanova, who missed the first two matches with an injury, cruised to her first singles victory of the year, defeating Sydney Seeley, 6-1, 6-1, in the number six match.
"It was good to see (Ekaterina) Stepanova back in the lineup and get out there and do a good job in singles and doubles," Samara explained. "Obviously that has been an obstacle for us with numbers, so I'm happy to see that she's doing well."
Lauren Burich, competing in the number five singles match, was especially proud of the way she won, defeating Antonina Farrar, 6-0, 6-0.
"It feels good. Like I told (head coach) Tina (Samara), I had a goal at the beginning of the match to be the first one off the court, since usually I'm not. Usually I'm one of the last ones, so it felt good," Burich noted.
Coming off of a match last Sunday in which she won an emotional tiebreaker as the last player on the court in Wisconsin's 5-2 win over Eastern Michigan, Burich called today's speedy victory "Extra good because of what happened last time."
Samara backed up Burich's remarks, "I love that Burr (Lauren Burich) had a goal and I said that's great, put the date down February 7th, 2015 first time ever Lauren Burich ever finishes first, but I'm happy she was thinking about something. Every player needs to have a goal out there that we as a staff aren't dictating. I always had little goals for myself when I played and I think that just shows a little bit of maturity in Burich."
Looking towards tomorrow's match, against Marquette Burich was confident in the team's approach.
"I think it's going to be tough. On every court they're always good. I think we're just going to have to grind, have energy, and play well."
The Badgers take on Marquette Sunday at 10 a.m. at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Admission is free to the public.
