COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- It was a day of firsts for the women's tennis team as they defeated No. 53 Maryland (9-8, 2-4) 4-3 on Saturday. The Badgers (7-7, 1-3) clinched their first Big Ten win of the year, their first doubles point win in the conference and their first win over a ranked team.
"I'm really proud of this group," Wisconsin head coach Tina Samara said. "We have been on the wrong end of the 4-3 matches so many times this year; it was nice to see us finally get that doubles point against a very solid Maryland team."
Junior Lauren Chypyha played a key role in the battle against the Terrapins, as she tallied a point in the No.1 singles spot over Maryland's Ekaterina Tour, securing the victory in the third set (6-0, 6-7, 7-5).
"Lauren Chypyha did a great job today," Samara said. "She's had a few rough three-set loses recently and I was happy to see her finish strong."
However, the Toronto, Ontario, native couldn't quite sweep the No. 1 position. Chypyha and her partner Maria Avgerinos lost 2-8 against the Terps' ranked double duo Welma Luus and Ekaterina Tour, who sit in the 63rd spot in the country.
Wisconsin dominated the other doubles matches, winning 8-3 in both sets, with Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider in the No. 2 doubles position and Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau in the No. 3 position.
The Badgers and Terps split the singles points 3-3. Rider and Grambeau both defeated their opponents in two sets, while Chypha did it in three.
"The team has worked hard and not given up through this season, and I'm happy to see it finally pay off," Samara said.
The Red and White continue their East Coast road trip, facing the other Big Ten initiate, Rutgers, Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
