OXFORD, Ohio--The second road trip of the year for the newly-ranked Wisconsin women's tennis team started with a bang as the No. 71 Badgers routed Illinois State, 7-0, in Oxford, Ohio, the home of tomorrow's opponent, Miami (Ohio).
After taking the doubles point 2-1, the Badgers (6-3) swept the Redbirds' (2-7) singles players one through six to claim their sixth victory of the season and second on the road.
Doubles play won the Badgers their first point, with wins coming on courts No. 2 and 3.
Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos have now won six of their last seven doubles matches, blanking Valerija Gercar and Chanel Cudiero 6-0 on the second doubles court.
On the third doubles court, Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova won their third-straight doubles decision with a 6-2 triumph over the Redbirds' team of Catherine Schulman and Natalia Parchowska.
For the ninth match in a row, the Badgers were steadied by their top singles player, Lauren Chypyha, who downed ISU's Kadi Ilves 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
"Of course we are happy to get the win," head coach Tina Samara started. "But we still need to impose ourselves more especially in doubles. We have really improved our ability and willingness to run balls down when things aren't going well which has helped us in the last few matches."
The Badgers used all of those extra efforts as the match wound down to help in their sweep of ISU's singles players.
Lauren Burich tallied her fifth-straight singles victory en route to improving her season record to 8-1 by defeating Valerija Gercar.
On the second court, Maria Avgerinos improved to 7-2 for the season with her straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, win over Donna Haycock.
Ekaterina Stepanova is now 5-2 after her straight-set victory over Natalia Parchowska on Court 6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Badgers will be back in action tomorrow against this weekend's host, Miami (Ohio) at 9 a.m.
Samara is looking forward to getting back on the courts tomorrow.
