BOSTON, Mass. -- On the second Sunday of spring racing season for the lightweight women, the Badgers landed in the grand and petite finals at the Boston Round Robin.
"It was a great trip. Saturday we had a great warm up with MIT and both of our crews won. This morning we started quite early with heats and finals. The varsity lightweight eight ended up in first place and the second varsity lightweight eight ended up in second place in probably the closest race of the day. All were separated by a second or a second and a half, so that was quite exciting," head coach Lisa Schlenker commented.
The varsity lightweight eight finished the first heat in second place with 7:09.9, around eight seconds behind Stanford. The MIT women crossed the finish line 15.7 seconds later.
Wisconsin's second place finish placed them into the petite final for the varsity lightweight eight. The crew showed significant improvement in their time, as they made an impressive 6:52.3 final down the 2000-meter stretch.
"In the last two weekends our crew has gotten to race eight times so it was quite nice to be back in Boston. The weather was great; a little windy but nothing compared to what Madison was," Schlenker said.
The Badgers' second varsity lightweight eight stroked its way to a victory in the first heat. The 7:06.3 finish placed Wisconsin 7.8 before Stanford and 34.1 seconds ahead of third-place MIT. The first place finish placed Wisconsin into the grand final.
The second varsity lightweight eight also showed great reduction in time in the grand final. The Badgers shaved over 40 seconds off of their morning speed. They soared past the line in 6:51.6 seconds, taking the silver just behind Boston University's 6:50.3 finish.
"We're looking forward to having two weeks of training and we'll go back and knowing that we only have four major races in spring season we're just starting to get going. We're eager to start digging for more and reaching for those championships, especially at Eastern Sprints and IRAs," Schlenker said.
Wisconsin takes a weekend off before returning to West Windsor, New Jersey for the EAWRC Sprints on May 3.
