MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's tennis team dropped its final regular season match of the season, 5-2, on the road against Purdue.
The Badgers (10-11, 4-7 B1G) stumbled early on, as Purdue (13-7, 6-5 B1G) took the doubles point to open the match. The Boilermakers got an 8-4 victory from their No. 88 ranked doubles team of T.Bernard-Feigenbaum and Daniela Vidal's over UW's top pair of Lauren Chypyha and Kelsey Grambeau.
In singles play, the Badgers started well thanks to the top play of Chypyha, who dispatched her PU opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Chypyha improves to 15-6 this season at the top singles spot, including a 6-5 mark in Big Ten play.
"Chypyha again did a great job at No. 1" head coach Tina Samara said. "I was really happy to see that and for her to play the game that she has had success with--just being more aggressive and being more like herself."
Purdue was able to clinch victory with wins on the second, third and fifth courts, but the Badgers wouldn't go down without a fight.
"I think we had chances at 5 and 6," Samara said. "Those are matches that are definitely winnable against this team, and those are the matches we need to capitalize one when we face them again this Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament."
After winning her first set, 6-3, Lauren Burich fell in the second before storming back in the end of match tiebreaker to win the fourth court 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). It was Burich's 12th singles win of the year and her first singles victory since April 5th, when she defeated Iowa's Katie Zordani.
The Badgers end the regular season with a record of 10-11, their best record since the 2012 season when the team went 12-11 before losing in the first round of the Big Ten tournament to Indiana.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Badgers will look ahead to the 2015 edition of the Big Ten tournament, which will begin this Thursday, April 23, and will continue through Sunday in Evanston, Illinois.
Wisconsin earned the 10th seed in the tournament and will meet No. 34 Purdue, the seven seed, in a rematch of today's match.
"In a way, it's annoying because we just played them," Samara admitted with a laugh. "But at the same time, we just played them and we know exactly what to expect. We know what we're up against, and I think we'll do a better job."
