UW duo are at evaluation camp for 2016 IIHF World Championships
MADISON, Wis. -- Former Wisconsin women's hockey players Blayre Turnbull and Meaghan Mikkelson earned invites to Hockey Canada's National Women's Team training camp, taking place this week in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Players will participate in daily practices as well as four games, all free and open to the public. The camp serves as a midseason evaluation of players and will be used in selecting Team Canada's roster for the 2016 IIHF Women's World Championships, taking place March 28 to April 4 in Kamloops, British Columbia.
A forward from Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Turnbull has represented Canada at the Four Nations Cup in 2014 and 2015, winning a gold medal at both tournaments. Turnbull currently plays for the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, notching five goals and eight assists this season.
Turnbull's 98 career points at Wisconsin ranks 20th in program history, and her eight career short-handed goals are tied for the most in UW history. Captain of the 2014-15 squad, Turnbull was named an All-WCHA First Team member the same year, and became only the second player in the Badgers' history to record a power-play hat trick.
Mikkelson, hailing from St. Albert, Alberta, has played for Hockey Canada on numerous international stages. Mikkelson won Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014, tallying an assist in the gold-medal game in 2014. She has played in four Four Nations Cups (2008-10, 2012) and five IIHF World Championships (2008-09, 2011-13). Mikkelson joins Turnbull on the Inferno, tallying an assist in her five games this season.
At Wisconsin, Mikkelson notched 29 goal and 86 assists, holding the seventh-most points by a defenseman in program records. Mikkelson also holds the single-season record for defensive points, tabbing 11 goals and 38 assists in the 2006-07 season. The same year, she was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and a Patty Kazimierz Award Top 10 finalist. Mikkelson won back-to-back national championships with the Badgers in 2006 and 2007.
