Our House: Badgers remain perfect at home in 1-0 win over Rutgers

Mike Catalano assists Sam Brotherton in first career goal

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team continued their Big Ten journey at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Saturday night against Rutgers, protecting its home turf in a 1-0 shutout win against the Scarlet Knights.

"It was a fantastic match," head coach John Trask said. "I'm very pleased with our team's performance and this match. There is never an easy game in the Big Ten and their coaching staff does a fantastic job. It was nice getting the 1-0 shutout and we'll take it and move forward."

The Badgers found the back of the net in the 35th minute when Mike Catalano danced through an opening, beating the goalie and defender in the process, and found a wide open Sam Brotherton who used a line-drive finish to give the Badgers the 1-0 lead.

"Mike Catalano's assist tonight to find Sam Brotherton in front of goal was fantastic," Trask continued. "Mike is a terrific soccer player and young man. I love working with him. He drives me crazy every once in a while, as they all do, but the good ones are normally like that."

Although the Badgers didn't tally another score, their stifling offensive pressure proved potential for the remainder of the season to come.

Being at home and seeing Philip (Schilling) and the back four, and the whole team get another shut out is excellent," Trask said. "I told the team after the game, 'At some point the flood gates are going to open'. We're too good of an attacking team and we're saving it up for the right moment. This team looks like it's ready to explode offensively and we're pretty excited with where we're at."

Schilling got the start in net for UW, recording three saves on the day and his third shutout of the season. His spotlight save of the night came in the first minute of play when the Rutgers tested his hands with a hard strike to the bottom corner of the net that was swatted away by the Badger keeper.

The Badgers led corner kicks five to four. Shots were tied between the two teams at 13 apiece. Junior Tom Barlow led the Badgers in shots with three, including one shot on goal.

"At the start of the season it was an objective to protect the McClimon and I think we've done that really well," Brotherton said. "We've stayed really disciplined and worked phenomenally as a unit to keeping them shut out. We're on a two game winning streak now and haven't lost at home. I think we're in a good place. The loss (to Penn State) was a tough one to take but it was motivation to get back up and on the right path."

The Badgers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Milwaukee to play in a non-conference match against Marquette at 7 p.m.
