MILWAUKEE, Wis. – An intense in-state rivalry was settled on Wednesday as the Wisconsin men's soccer team clinched its third-straight shutout and defeated Marquette on the road at Valley Fields, 1-0.
"It was a tough contest," head coach
John Trask said. "We took our goal well. It was nice to see Mike (Catalano) get on the board and it was a great play by Mark (Segbers) and Brian (Hail) in the setup."
Junior Catalano, who was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week on Monday, showed why he's of the best midfielders in college soccer. On a Badger counter attack, senior
Brian Hail led Catalano as he raced through the Marquette defense and lined a shot to the far post, striking first in the game and drawing a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute of play.
It was Catalano's third goal of the season and Hail's second assist of the season. Catalano now has a three-game point streak after scoring a goal last Tuesday against Saint Louis and logging the game-winning assist against Rutgers on Sunday.
That would be the only goal scored during the in-state rivalry.
"We were resilient and that's part of being a good college soccer team," Trask said. "The games come fast and furious and sometimes you have to gut it out."
The Badger defense held strong for the entirety of the game but had a close call when Marquette was awarded two free kicks in the final minute of play. The first free kick resulted in a defensive save by
Alex Masbruch, while the second barely sailed over the net.
Philipp Schilling got the start in net for the Badgers, earning his third-straight shutout and fourth of the season. Schilling made three saves on the night.

"Marquette is a good team but we did what we needed to win and it's another shutout for Philipp and the guys in the back," Trask stated. "That has to make them feel good, especially in Sam's (Brotherton) absence."
Marquette outshot Wisconsin 15-7 and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2. Both teams were penalized with 10 fouls.
"This should hopefully give us confidence going into a very difficult game against Michigan State in East Lansing," Trask said.
Wisconsin is back in action against on Sunday afternoon when they travel to East Lansing to play the 21st-ranked Michigan State Spartans. The match will begin at 12 p.m. at the DeMartin Soccer Stadium.
