ANN ARBOR, Mich. – "It's great. I was happy with the team's performance today," head coach
Paula Wilkins said. "I thought they brought the energy they needed to do it. There were some people who stepped up in different roles and I thought they did a good job."
Dubbed as the one of the most exciting and aggressive draws this season by the announcers, the Wisconsin women's soccer team (6-4-6 overall, 3-2-3 Big Ten) clashed with No. 25 Michigan (9-3-2, 5-2-1) and fought the Wolverines to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.
It was Wisconsin's sixth tie and seventh overtime game of the season.
With less than two minutes left in double overtime, a powerful shot by junior
Sydney McGinnis nearly gave Wisconsin the upset. McGinnis' perfect shot nearly grazed in but Michigan's goalkeeper Sarah Jackson got the tip of her fingertips on it and barely sent it out.
Senior
Rose Lavelle gave Wisconsin the go-ahead goal in the 20th minute of the game. The low-shot goal came off of a corner kick from senior
Micaela Powers. The assist was Powers' fifth dish of the season.
"I thought we did enough to win on the night and like I said, the biggest thing is that I'm happy with their performance and what they did," Wilkins said. "We just got to get a little bit of a lucky break here on one of these games and I think we'll be good but I'm really happy with their performance."
Wisconsin outshot Michigan 21-9 and 7-0 in the overtime periods. The Badgers also tallied eight shots on goal while the Wolverines logged one.
Michigan recorded seven saves while UW had none. Both teams tallied four corner kicks apiece.
The Wolverines' Nicky Waldeck netted the equalizer in the 42nd minute of the match with a header. Rubina Veerakone was credited with the assist for sending the long ball from 40 yards out.
UW had two opportune moments in the last minute of regulation. Lavelle took the first shot that went wide and it ended in a corner kick chance for Powers. Senior
Holly Heckendorf took advantage of the corner but her shot was blocked by the Michigan defense.
"I'm happy with the team's fight. I thought we put Michigan under some pressure defensively, especially at Michigan's home field," Wilkins added. "It's a really hard place to play and they have some really talented players, especially up front. So I am not happy with the result and I don't think anyone on the team is satisfied with the result, but again I think if we look at the performance, we're happy with what the performance was."
Lavelle led the Badger's offensive strike, leading the team with seven shots, three of which were on goal.
McGinnis also added in four shots, with two on goal while freshman
Allie Winterfield also accumulated two shots on goal.
The Badgers are back in action on Sunday at noon with another Big Ten matchup with Michigan State in East Lansing.
