Junior earns first conference accolade for back-to-back shutouts
MADISON, Wis. – Philipp Schilling has made quite an impact in his first season with the Wisconsin men's soccer team. The Badgers' goalkeeper had back-to-back shutout performances against Milwaukee and fourth-ranked Indiana last week, earning him Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week accolades from the league Tuesday.
"Obviously it's a great honor. I think Philipp would be first to say it is credit to key defending all the way through, from the forwards all the way to the defenders," head coach John Trask said. "It is nice to have someone from our backline get honored because of the shutouts and the stingy team defending.
"It could've easily gone to one of our defenders, midfielders or forwards because everybody has bought in to defending. I think that just shows with Philipp being our first recipient of a player of the week honoree this year."
Schilling earns the award after a stellar performance against the Hoosiers, where he stifled a career-high six saves. He made eight total saves on the week.
He is the first player of the week selection for the Badgers since goalkeeper Adrian Remeniuk garnered the award on Oct. 7, 2015. He is the 22nd defensive player of the week selection in program history.
Schilling, a Schwegenheim, Germany native, attended Heinrich Heine Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He played for TuS Mechtersheim, DJK SV Phönix Schifferstadt and TSG Kaiserslautern.
