Senior defends her individual title as Badgers place second

Simpsonville, Ky. – For the second year in a row, senior Brooke Ferrell is taking home the Cardinal Cup crown.

Once again, the Wisconsin women's golf team put together another balanced performance in the final round to capture second place at the University of Louisville Golf Club and end the fall season on a high note.

"I was really excited for Brooke to see her play the way she did," UW head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "It was a little bit more of a struggle for us as a team overall, but in the end it was a really consistent, really solid way to close out the fall season. We're excited to finish second and I'm proud of how they competed."

Ferrell (75-68-71=214) made birdie on her last hole and shot a 1-under 71 in the final round to seal her victory. The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native finished one stroke ahead of Florida State's Matilda Castren and Morgane Metraux. This is Ferrell's first solo tournament win of her career after tying for first last season at the Cardinal Cup and Westbrook Spring Invitational.

The Badgers (+34, 303-294-301=898), who are ranked 42nd by Golfstat.com, finished 22 strokes behind No. 7 Florida State (+12). No. 48 Kentucky (+37), No. 22 Illinois (+44), No. 50 Louisville (+52) and No. 33 East Carolina (+52) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Nat Zeng (75-78-74=227) fired off a 2-over 74 to move into a tie for 18th place, while junior Becky Klongland (77-75-77=229) finished two strokes back to end tied for 21st.

At 18-over, junior Gabby Curtis (76-78-80=234) ended with an 8-over 80 to tie for 45th and senior Michelle Cheung (84-73-79=236) was two strokes behind to tie for 51st.

Competing as an individual, junior Ali Nageotte (83-80-87=250) tied for 89th.

In team standings, Maryland (+53), Virginia Tech (+55), Cincinnati (+60) and Columbia (+67) completed the top ten out of the 17-team field.

With the fall season now in the books, the Badgers look ahead to the spring as UW opens play at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Florida, from Feb. 5-7. The Badgers took home three top-five finishes this fall, including the team title at the East/West Match Play Challenge, in just four tournaments played and enter the offseason with plenty of momentum.

"We have plenty to work on and plenty to improve on, but it becomes a lot easier when you enter into the offseason coming off success in the fall," Oehrlein said. "We'll take some time to rest, catch up and make sure we're on top of things academically and then we'll really get going on our skill instruction."
