MANKATO, Minn. – Thanks to a pair of goals from junior Baylee Wellhausen, the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a 3-1 win over Minnesota State on Saturday at the Verizon Wireless Center.

Wellhausen earned her second career multi-goal game, scoring a pair of goals in the second period to help the Badgers (9-0-1, 7-0-1-1 WCHA) complete a sweep of the Mavericks (2-7-1, 0-7-1-0 WCHA).

"It felt really good to get the win today," Wellhausen said. "It was definitely a battle, I think that the team pulled together and pulled off the win and it feels more victorious when you have such a battle like that."

???????Mellissa Channell also collected a goal for UW, while netminder Ann-Renée Desbiens earned her 79th career victory, stopping 13 of the 14 shots she faced.

The first period was a back and forth affair, as neither team was able to get great looks at net. UW outshot the Mavs 11-8 in the first stanza.

In the second, it was the Mavericks who scored first as Demi Gardner scored on a 3-on-1 to give MSU its first goal of the weekend.

However UW quickly responded back, as Channell scored her first of the season just three minutes after the MSU goal. Channell took a feed from Jenny Ryan and blasted a rocket into the back of the MSU net to tie the game at one.

"It was good to get us on the board," Channell said. "Once you get one goal, they usually just keep rolling in, and I think it's always toughest to get the first one so once we got that under our belt, we were able to get going."

???????Wellhausen gave UW a one-goal lead with six minutes to go in the period thanks to her third goal of the season. The Williams Bay, Wisconsin, native walked in from below the goal line to shoot and after Quade made the initial save, Wellhausen picked up her own rebound and buried the puck past Quade's glove-side.

Less than three minutes later, Wellhausen doubled the UW lead with the game's final goal. After receiving a pass from Desbiens on the breakout, Wellhausen displayed her speed in a rush up ice. Closing in on Quade, Wellhausen rifled a shot past the MSU netminder, beating her blocker-side, post and in.

"The momentum really shifted early in the second period as we really started to capitalize on our opportunities," UW head coach Mark Johnson said. "Baylee's second goal was a really nice goal, she used her speed and kept her feet moving and it certainly gave us some big momentum." 

It marked Wellhausen's first goals since she also scored two in UW's 6-0 win over St. Cloud State to open up the season on Sept. 23.

UW outshot MSU 12-3 in the third, but were unable to generate any additional goals.

Saturday's contest marked the sixth-straight road game for the Badgers, as UW completed the road swing with a perfect 6-0-0 record.

"The kids played well and hard," Johnson said. "We're missing a few people this weekend but the kids got an opportunity and played extremely well. Now we've got an extra day of rest before the Saturday and Sunday series, and then a weekend off. We're getting better which is the most important thing."

"It's tough playing on the road, especially when you don't get many fans so it's kind of tough to create your own energy on the bench," Channell said. "I'm happy to be back at LaBahn next weekend."

Wisconsin heads back to Madison to host No. 10 Bemidji State at LaBahn Arena. Faceoff on Nov. 5 is set for 2 p.m., while Nov. 6's contest begins at 1 p.m.
