Promise fulfilled: Badgers protect house with 2-1 win over Ohio State

Wisconsin claims first 10-win season since 2013

MADISON, Wis. – A promise in the start of the year to protect the McClimon Soccer Complex was fulfilled in a Sunday match against the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-12-1 overall, 3-4-1 Big Ten). In a testy 2-1 win over the Big Ten foe, Wisconsin (10-3-3, 4-2-2) earned its first 10-win season and undefeated-at-home mark since the 2013 season when they went 14-5-2.

"It's always nice to see seniors win on senior day," head coach John Trask said. "I was just pleased to get another win in the Big Ten, it's a very difficult conference and Ohio State was very tough and we were up against it after the red card but we did enough to win the game. We scored two goals, they scored one, so we'll take it and move on.

"It was one of the goals before the season was to be undefeated and other than the blemish against Indiana with the tie," Trask continued. "We won every game at home. Reminded me of the 2013 season which was an extremely successful year and just want to keep it going."

Enda O'Neill wasted no time breaking the scoreless tie with his first career goal. In an incredible effort from junior Tom Barlow in the 15th minute of play, the ball was knocked loose from the keeper and rolled into the box on a tee for O'Neill. It was Barlow's second assist of the year and eighth of his career.

The second Badgers strike came just before the close of the half from sophomore Isaac Schlenker. In the 43rd minute of play, the sophomore tracked a shot from junior Chris Mueller and sent a laser to the back post that gave the Badgers a commanding 2-0 lead over the Buckeyes.

The second half brought a wave off aggressive play from both sides.

The Badgers continued their efforts down a man, after Mike Catalano was sent from the game due to two yellow cards, and held tightly for the most part. It wasn't until the 85th minute that the Buckeyes got on the board with a goal from Yaw Amankwa to notch the game at, 2-1.

That Buckeye goal would be the only one against Badger keeper Philipp Schilling, who recorded four saves on the day.

Wisconsin also dominated the stat sheet leading shots 19-15 and earning a season-high 12 corner kicks.

The Badgers now turn their focus to the postseason where they will compete in the talent-packed Big Ten Conference tournament. UW will host Ohio State in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. at the McClimon Complex.

"Hopefully we can win the game next week and move on to the semifinals," Trask said. "I know the guys would love to have a chance to be down in Indianapolis but it's going to be a tremendously hard game, regardless of who we play and we'll get our guys rested up, and get the field ready to go and be ready to play, drop the ball and get it on.
