MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's rowing team continued its strong start to the fall season with a comprehensive performance at the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, Illinois, on Sunday. All six events that the team participated in resulted in a victory for a UW boat.
The Head of the Rock, which was an all-day event, started early for the Badgers as the collegiate pairs race was the fourth event of the morning. Out of 13 entries in the race, first through 12th place were all Badger boats with Kate Ruffalo and
Jenn Whitehill taking the top spot. The pairing of
Brianna Wynne and
Mirha Girt took second, while
Eliza Clifford and
Maren Schultz rounded out the top-three.
"For the varsity group, the gelling of the sophomores is coming together, which is good to see," lightweight coach
Dusty Mattison said. "We're really setting high standards and everyone is rising to those standards."
In the women's open single event,
Maddie Wanamaker finished first out of four competitors with a time of 18:13.987.
The Cardinal and white would continue their run of success by finishing all three participants in the novice four and openweight four events in the top-three spots. The first-place finisher in the novice four, coxed by
Saylor Martin, finished about 40 seconds ahead of the second-place UW boat. In the openweight four event, all three Badger boats finished within less than 30 seconds of each other.
The lightweight rowers continued to follow in their openweight counterparts lead by finishing in five out of the top six spots in the novice eight race. Drake was the non-UW boat, which finished in third.
"For the lightweights today, it was all about being a team and coming together," Mattison said. "They were there to work together and work as a unit and that was definitely achieved today."
Wisconsin finished off the last race of the regatta by sweeping the top-four spots in the openweight eight race. The boat coxed by
Saylor Martin finished just one second ahead of the second-place lightweight Badger boat that was coxed by
Audrey Dalgarno.
"The fall is a great time to try our athletes out not only in different lineups, but different sides," associate head coach
Nancy LaRocque said. "That will help us be more versatile for spring racing."
The next event of the fall season for both the openweight and lightweight teams will take place on Oct. 22-23 at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
